GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles played their home opener on Saturday afternoon against Trinity Christian.
Kachinvya Silwamba scored one goal in each half to propel them to a 3-2 victory. Cornerstone will take a 1-1-1 overall record into Tuesday's match vs. Calumet College of Saint Joseph.
Game Flow
Both teams had several scoring chances in the first half. Trinity almost netted one off a set piece late in the first half but goalkeeper
Dary DeWalt made the save. Shortly thereafter,
Richard Areche passed a through ball to
Kachinvya Silwamba, who put it past the keeper to give CU a 1-0 halftime lead.
Less than a minute into the second half, Trinity converted a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1. The Golden Eagles quickly retook the lead with two quick goals: The first was Silwamba's second of the game, assisted by
Kevin Nimmo; The second was scored by
Allyn Anthony, assisted by
Josue Uquillas. Trinity scored a goal with a couple minutes to go in regulation but Cornerstone held on for a 3-2 win, the first of the season.
Nick Hopkins played the second half in goal, earning the win.
