GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles ended the home season in style with a 3-1 win vs. Cleary to increase their winning streak to four with a 3-1 win vs. Cleary University. Ten seniors were honored before the match and three of them found the net to improve the Cornerstone record to 8-7-1, 7-2-0 WHAC on the year. CU will conclude the regular season with a pair of road games at Lawrence Tech and Madonna. The first match will be at Lawrence Tech on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
How it happened:
- Matt Luce scored his second goal of the season in the 30th minute to give CU a 1-0 lead at the half.
- Cornerstone saw a few subs have to come in earlier than expected in the first half after Matt Luce and Brennan Joseph came out with injury.
- Benjamin Overholt added an insurance goal to go up 2-0 in the 56th minute off a beautiful lead pass from Kachinvya Silwamba.
- Action picked up in the final 10 minutes of the match as a yellow card by Joshua Busscher gave Cleary a penalty kick that they were able to convert to cut the Cornerstone lead to just one.
- CU quickly responded with a goal in the 83rd minute as Richard Areche dribbled through the defense to find the back of the net and give the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead.
- Cleary would be unable to respond in the final few minutes resulting in a 3-1 final score.
By the Numbers
- Cornerstone has won four straight for the first time since the 2013 season.
- Joshua Mitchell saw action in net for the first time in nearly a month after returning from injury.
- Cornerstone outshot Cleary 12 to seven on the match.
What's Next?
The Golden Eagles conclude their season on the road with a pair of matches next week. The week will begin at Lawrence Tech with playoff seeding on the line on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
