Vander Sluis ties record to lead No. 9 Men’s Hoops to 81-66 win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Sam Vander Sluis tied a single game school record for rebounds with 23 as the senior led the No. 9 ranked Golden Eagles to an 81-66 victory over Madonna on Wednesday night. The CU defense held the Crusaders 23 points below their season average as they improve to 11-3 on the season and 6-0 in the WHAC. Cornerstone will head to the road for their next four games starting on Saturday at No. 16 Indiana Tech.
 
What you need to know
  • Madonna scored the first five points and that was their largest lead of the game
  • CU chipped away at the margin and took their first lead at 10-8 5:18 into the game
  • Cornerstone led by as many as six in the opening half on a triple from Christian Rodriguez with 5:06 to play
  • MU scored the final bucket of the half on a tip-in layup as time expired to lead 32-30
  • The teams traded leads for the first three minutes of the second half but CU took the lead for good on a Rodriguez 3-pointer with 16:52 to play
  • Cornerstone slowly built their lead for the remainder of the half, leading by as many as 18 on two different occasions
