Box Score GRANDVILLE, Mich. - The women's tennis team picked up their first win of the season in their home opener on Friday night as the Golden Eagles downed Alma College, 5-4. The victory was highlighted by a 2-1 edge in doubles and a thrilling 3-set win by
Ana Hoezee. CU will compete Saturday in another non-conference tilt against Olivet College.
Doubles Highlights - CU took a 2-1 edge after doubles play with the Golden Eagles picking up a close win on the second court -
Ana Hoezee and
Marissa Hooker defeated their foes by a final of 9-7 while sisters
Amanda VerHulst and
Nicole VerHulst won on the third court by a final of 8-4.
Singles Highlights - In some very close matches all around, Cornerstone was able to get the three points it needed to win the overall match on courts two, four and five.
Marissa Hooker won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 and
Sierra Griffith won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. After Alma had come back to tie it at 4-4, it all came down to court No. 4 as
Ana Hoezee pulled out a thrilling 10-6 win in the third set tie-breaker to help CU post the 5-4 win.
What's Next? Cornerstone will play their third straight MIAA foe as they travel to Olivet to take on the Comets on Saturday at 1 p.m.
