Softball shut out by Northwestern Ohio

LIMA, Ohio. – The Golden Eagles traveled to Lima, Ohio on Friday to take on the Northwestern Ohio Racers. Last year, UNOH mercied CU 9-1 in both games in Grand Rapids. Cornerstone outhit Northwestern Ohio in game one but fell 2-0. In game two, UNOH scored five runs in the third inning en route to a 6-0 shutout. Cornerstone (9-11 overall, 4-4 WHAC) will stay on the road to play a doubleheader against Rochester on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Game 1McKena Razenberg and Maddie Vassar led off the third inning with back-to-back infield hits, but the offense couldn't capitalize. Another rally brewed in the fifth inning when a pair of runners reached, but again failed to score. The Racers broke the ice with two runs in the sixth inning, one off a triple and the other off a base hit up the middle. The Golden Eagles outhit the Racers 8-5 in the game, but fell 2-0 in the category that counts.

Maddie Vassar went 3-for-4 at the plate, her second 3-hit game of the season. Alicia Ontiveros went 2-for-3. Brooke Leonard surrendered five hits and two earned runs in the circle.

Game 2 – UNOH got on the board early with a run in the second inning. They tacked on five more in the third inning, four of which were unearned. Cierra Langejans hit a base hit up the middle in the fifth inning to put two runners on base with one out, but the rally fizzled. UNOH earned their second shutout of the day, winning game two 6-0.

Sierra Sanchez went 2-for-3 at the plate. Rachel Younts pitched three innings and received the loss; Courtney Ducharme pitched three innings in relief.

By the Numbers
15 Maddie Vassar reached base safely (three times) in game one, which was the 15th straight game she reached base. Unfortunately, that streak was snapped in game two.
