Women’s Soccer falls 4-1 on the road in season opener

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Golden Eagles were unable to get a victory in the season opener against Mount Vernon Nazarene, falling 4-1 to the Cougars on the road. MVNU got off to a fast start, scoring two goals in the first half hour of the match to take early command. CU falls to 0-1-0 on the year with the loss, as they will return to action on September 7 for the home opener against Huntington University.  

What you need to know
  • Paige Renz and Amberly Knox each scored for MVNU in the first half to give them a 2-0 lead at the break. 
  • Cornerstone responded with a goal in the 55thminute by Alexys Riksen that was assisted by Erica Mick
  • Mount Vernon scored their final two goals in the 64thand 66thminute to secure the 4-1 victory. 
  • Riksen played in her first game in over a year returning to the pitch after hip surgery. 
  • Mikayla Johnson and Abby Workman split time in goal each playing a half.

What's Next? 
Cornerstone will have a week off before hosting Huntington for their home opener on September 7 at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles will play back-to-back home games on September 7-8 as they host their annual Night of Nets weekend.
