Women’s Soccer falls in rivalry game 2-1 at Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Despite scoring in the fifth minute of the match, Cornerstone was unable to come away with the road victory, falling 2-1 at Aquinas on Wednesday night. With the loss, CU drops to 4-4-0, 0-2-0 WHAC on the year as they have now lost three in a row after winning four straight. The Golden Eagles will continue the road trip at Indiana Tech on Saturday at 3 p.m. 

What you need to know
  • Alexys Riksen scored her fifth goal of the year off a Savannah Petty assist on a free kick in the fifth minute to give CU a 1-0 lead.
  • Aquinas began to gain momentum and eventually responded with a goal by Katie Vitella in the 24thminute. 
  • The Golden Eagles were outshot 11-2 in the first half but the score remained 1-1 at the break. 
  • Abby Workman made two crucial saves early in the second half to keep the game tied at 1-1. 
  • Aquinas finally broke the tie in the 77thminute on a ball curved in to the net off a corner kick by Anya Pallas. 
  • CU was unable to respond in the final 13 minutes, falling 2-1 on the road.

  • Alexys Riksen has surpassed last season's leading goal scorer, tallying her fifth of the year for a total of 11 points on the season.

Cornerstone will continue the road trip, traveling to Indiana Tech on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game against the Warriors. The Golden Eagles Men's Soccer team is scheduled to play at Indiana Tech as well with a noon start time.
