Balanced attack leads Men’s Basketball to 74-56 win vs. Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles saw four players score in double-figures tonight, including a game high 21 points and 11 rebounds from senior Sam Vander Sluis as balance helped Cornerstone to a 74-56 win vs. Aquinas. CU has earned a season sweep of the Saints and improves to 17-5, 10-2 WHAC on the year. The team will be back in action on Saturday at Lourdes for a 3 p.m. tip. 

What you need to know
  • Cornerstone would begin the game with a statement, as Kyle Hayes put the first points on the board with a slam dunk. 
  • After AQ would tie the game at 9-9, CU would go on an 11-2 run that was highlighted by a Carter Nyp three, forcing the Saints into a timeout. 
  • Aquinas would respond with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to just one at 22-21. 
  • The Golden Eagles would have five players in the first half with five or more points to take a four-point lead. Sam Vander Sluis would lead the way with 11 points and four rebounds. 
  • Cornerstone began the second half on a 9-2, highlighted by Kyle Hayes second dunk of the day increasing their lead to 11. 
  • Riley Costen and Carter Nyp would each score five consecutive points to put CU on top 55-38 and force AQ into another timeout. 
  • Aquinas was able to cut the deficit back to 12, but that was as close as they would get as Cornerstone would go on to win 74-56. 
 
By the Numbers
9 – Christian Rodriguez (5) and Riley Costen (4) combined for nine of the Golden Eagles 11 assists in the first half. 
4 – Four different CU players would score double-figures tonight. 
20 – Sam Vander Sluis recorded his 20thdouble-double of the year with 21 points and 11 rebounds. 
10 – Christian Rodriguez recorded double-digit assists for the third time this season.
