No. 7 Men’s Basketball earns 19-point win in foul ridden game

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a game that saw 36 fouls called, the Golden Eagles were able to pull away to win their fourth straight game with an 89-70 win over Rochester College during CU's purple game. Sam Vander Sluis and Christian Rodriguez had big outings, scoring 47 of the teams 89 points in the win. CU is now 19-5, 12-2 WHAC as they continue to sit in first place in conference play. 

What you need to know
  • Riley Costen would score the first six points of the game on back-to-back three's. 
  • Sam Vander Sluis would hit four consecutive field goals followed by a Carter Nyp three to help CU get up by nine at 21-12. 
  • The threes would continue to fall, as Tyler Baker and Carter Nyp would hit a combined five of them in the first half to give CU a 45-30 halftime lead. 
  • Rochester would quickly cut the deficit to as low as six, starting the second half on a 14-5 run. 
  • CU would respond with a quick 5-0 spurt to push the lead back to double-digits. 
  • The lead would then remain double-digits as CU would get up by as many as 24 on their way to an 89-70 win over Rochester. 
 
By the Numbers
26/16 – Senior Sam Vander Sluis finished with a game high 26 points and 16 rebounds, recording his 22nd double-double of the year. 
17 – Christian Rodriguez scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half. 
 37 – The two teams combined for 37 made free throws tonight, Cornerstone hitting 21 and Rochester hitting 16.
14 – Carter Nyp scored 14 points off the bench.

Cornerstone will finish a two-game home stretch vs. Northwestern Ohio on Saturday at 3 p.m.
