Slow start and offensive struggles sink women's basketball against IWU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A slow start for the Golden Eagles doomed an otherwise strong effort as Cornerstone fell to #RV Indiana Wesleyan 71-45. Cornerstone was unable to contain IWU's Dayton Groninger, who put up a career high 27 points and added six assists. CU was led on offense by Shelby Nyboer and Kennedy Helderop, who both put up 14 points. Helderop also led the squad in rebounds and assists, with 5 and 4 respectively. The Golden Eagles are now 1-2 will be back in action tomorrow night as Spring Arbor University comes to town for a 7 pm tip-off. Live stats and video will be available at cugoldeneagles.com.

Game Flow:
  • As was the case against Grace, Cornerstone started rather slow on offense. Indiana Wesleyan wasted no time jumping out to a 13-0 lead.
  • CU's offensive woes continued deep into the first quarter, as their first basket didn't come until there was 0:52 remaining. Given the slow start, IWU ended the first up 15-4.
  • The Golden Eagle offense woke up in the second quarter, but they were unable to slow down the Wildcats, and trailed 32-16 going into halftime.
  • The two squads traded buckets in the third, with Cornerstone chipping away at the Indiana Wesleyan lead. At the end of the quarter, CU had closed the gap to 12 with IWU holding a 46-34 lead.
  • Cornerstone pushed hard, looking to make up ground in the fourth. IWU took advantage of the Golden Eagles desperation, hitting open threes and running the floor. When the final buzzer sounded, IWU had pushed their lead to 26 and walked out of Mol Arena 71-45 winners.
