No. 4 Morningside stifles Men’s Basketball to conclude Cornerstone Classic

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –  In Cornerstone's third game vs. an NAIA DII Top 5 opponent this season, the No. 4 Morningside Mustangs got the best of No. 12 Cornerstone 78-58. CU was held to just 36.1% from the field in the game and was only able to score 24 points in the first half. With the loss, Cornerstone is now 2-2 overall as they travel to Palos Heights, Illinois next weekend to participate in the Troll Classic against Trinity Christian and Saint Xavier. 
 

What you need to know? 
  • Morningside put extensive ball pressure on the Golden Eagles from the start, holding them to just six points in the first six minutes to get out to an 11-6 lead. 
  • Cory Ainsworth came in and hit a bucket to cut the deficit to just three, but that was followed by a 16-3 run from Morningside. 
  • Christian Rodriguez hit a three at the end of the half to cut the deficit to 21 at 45-24. 
  • Christian Rodriguez scored half of the Golden Eagles first half points as the rest of the team was held to just 5-21 from the field. 
  • Morningside's Tyler Borchers had his way throughout the second half giving the Mustangs a 25-point lead on a mid-range jumper with 14:10 to play. 
  • Morningside maintained a 20+ lead throughout the remainder of the game to earn the 78-58 victory. 
  • Trent Summerfield hit his first collegiate three in the second half of the game.

  • Morningside went 49.2% from the field while Cornerstone went just 36.1%. 
  • Tyler Baker and Christian Rodriguez each had a team high 14 points for CU. 
  • Tyler Borchers had a game high 27 on 12-19 shooting for the Mustangs. 
  • Brent Hibbitts led CU with eight rebounds. 

What's Next? 
Cornerstone will compete in the Troll Classic hosted by Trinity Christian in Illinois and take on the host on Friday night followed by a game vs. Saint Xavier on Saturday.
