No. 12 Men’s Basketball suffers first WHAC loss 71-59 at Lourdes

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The No. 12 Golden Eagles were stifled by a tough Lourdes team on Tuesday night, falling 71-59 for their first conference loss of the 2019-20 season. CU shot just 37.7% from the field and 25.0% from the three-point line as they move to 7-3, 3-1 WHAC on the year. Cornerstone will take a break from conference play this weekend as they host the annual Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic where they will take on Hope and Calvin. Action will begin on Friday, November 29 at 8 p.m. vs. Hope College. 
 
What you need to know? 
  • Lourdes got out to an early 11-6 lead before Tyler Baker went on a 5-0 run to tie things at 11 with 15:02 left in the first half. 
  • Turnovers struck the Golden Eagles in the middle of the first half, as the Gray Wolves went on a 9-0 run to take a 22-14 lead and force CU into a timeout. 
  • Out of the timeout, Lourdes scored four more points to conclude a 13-0 run and lead by 12 points. 
  • Kyle Hayes finally got the Golden Eagles out of the dry shooting spell, hitting an and-one layup to cut the deficit to 26-17 with 8:18 to play in the half. 
  • Lourdes brought the lead back to 11, but Christian Rodriguez began to heat up hitting a jumper and a three to make it 33-29 and force LU into a timeout with 1:37 left. 
  • Tyler Baker hit a three in the final minute as the Golden Eagles trailed by just three at the half, 35-32. 
  • Lourdes began the second half with a spark, scoring the first seven points before Drew Knickerbocker hit a three to give the Golden Eagles their first points of the half just over three minutes into the period. 
  • CU responded with a 9-3 run to cut the deficit to four capped off by a Christian Rodriguez layup to force Lourdes into a timeout at 45-41. 
  • Cornerstone cut the deficit to as low as two points, but the Gray Wolves had a response for every CU run, regaining a 10-point lead with 9:39 to play at 57-47. 
  • Tyler Baker hit his third three of the game to cut it to 59-50 as Cornerstone called a timeout with 8:20 to play. 
  • Lourdes dominated defensively down the stretch, holding CU to just nine points in the final 8:20 of the game. 
  • The Gray Wolves went on to win the game 71-59 to hand CU their first conference loss as the Golden Eagles shot just 37.7% from the field in the game. 

By the Numbers 
  • Cory Ainsworth recorded a career high eight boards in the loss at Lourdes. 
  • Tyler Baker led CU with 15 points and hit three of the Golden Eagles eight three-pointers on the game. 
  • Clif Snow led Lourdes with 25 points and went 10-11 at the line. 
  • Christian Rodriguez had a team high four assists and two steals. 
 
What's Next? 
The Golden Eagles return home after Thanksgiving to host the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic. Action will begin on Friday as Aquinas takes on Calvin at 6 p.m. and Cornerstone takes on Hope at 8 p.m. with both games inside Mol Arena.
