No. 14 Men’s Basketball falls on buzzer beater to Calvin in GRSHOF Classic

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cory Ainsworth's career high 24 off the bench was not enough for the No. 14 Golden Eagles as Derrick DeVries of Calvin hit a buzzer beater three to down CU 71-68. All four teams end the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic with a 1-1 record as Calvin's DeVries was named the MVP. Cornerstone is now 8-4 on the year as Tyler Baker and Cory Ainsworth were each named All-Classic Team selections. CU will return to WHAC play on Wednesday as they host UNOH at 7:30 p.m.

  • Carter Nyp then hit a three for the Golden Eagles to give them their largest lead of the game at 17-13.

  • The two teams continued to battle back and forth until Calvin increased their lead to a game high seven with 5:15 to play.
  • The Cory Ainsworth show took over in the final five minutes, scoring seven of the Golden Eagles final nine points and assisting on the lone other bucket by Kyle Hayes to help CU comeback and tie the game at 68 with just six seconds remaining.
  • Derrick DeVries hustled down the court off a missed free throw that would have given Cornerstone the lead to throw up a three-pointer at the buzzer and he drained it to help Calvin walk away with a 71-68 road victory.
