Strong start not enough against No.13 St. Francis

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the third time in the month of November and fourth time this season, the Golden Eagles played against an opponent either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA when 13th-ranked St. Francis came to town on Tuesday. Cornerstone held their own in the first half, but a 24-point second half scoring deficit led to a 79-45 loss, extending their losing skid to six. Cornerstone will continue non-conference action on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. tipoff against Trinity Christian.

Game Flow:
  • The first quarter saw a total of seven lead changes. Broghan Gamble hit two go-ahead three-pointers while Sterling DeGayner chipped in with one.
  • After Brooke Modderman hit a triple to chisel the deficit to 30-29, the Cougars went on an 11-0 run en route to a 41-31 lead at halftime. 
  • In the third quarter, St. Francis tripled the Golden Eagles' six points with an 18-spot in the third frame to extend their lead to 59-37.
  • Gamble put up the first points of the fourth quarter for the Golden Eagles with her fifth three-pointer of the contest.
  • St. Francis outscored the Golden Eagles 20-8 in the fourth quarter. 
  • The Cougars outscored the Golden Eagles 49-16 between the 5:00 mark of the second quarter and the end of the contest.

  • Broghan Gamble set a career high in points with 15 and three-pointers with five.
  • The Cougars outrebounded the Golden Eagles 49-32, but the teams finished with 26 defensive rebounds apiece. 
  • Cornerstone recorded season-highs in three-pointers (9) and blocks (7).
