No. 8 Men’s Basketball wins WHAC Title with 94-75 win at SHU

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Golden Eagles clinched their third consecutive outright WHAC regular season championship with a dominating 94-75 win at Siena Heights. Head Coach Kim Elders has now won 11 WHAC regular season championships in his 26 seasons at CU. Cornerstone will enter post season play with a 23-7, 16-4 WHAC record as they will host an opponent that has yet to be announced on Thursday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m. 

What you need to know
  • CU would get off to a hot start, going on a 7-0 run that included a Tyler Baker three to lead things off. 
  • The Saints would respond with a 9-0 run later in the half to cut the Cornerstone lead to one at 20-19. 
  • Work at the free throw line, and a pair of threes from Carter Nyp would help CU take a 41-35 lead into the half. 
  • Sam Vander Sluis would record yet another first half double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Vander Sluis also moved into first in program history for rebounds in a season with his sixth of the night passing Jim Eppink with 453 on the year. 
  • The second half would start off the same way as the first as Tyler Baker would make another three to increase the lead to nine. 
  • Siena Heights would go on a 16-5 run early in the second half to tie the game at 51. 
  • After the Saints had tied it Carter Nyp would cap off a CU 9-0 run to go back on top 60-51. 
  • The Golden Eagles offense would strike fire in the final 11:46 of the game, outscoring Siena Heights 33-25 to win 94-75. 
  • Sam Vander Sluis would score 17 second half points for a game high 28 on the game. 
 

By the Numbers
465 – Sam Vander Sluis is now the program leader for rebounds in a season with 465 on the year. 
27 – Sam Vander Sluis finshes the regular season with 27 double-doubles in 30 games. 
4 – Carter Nyp and Tyler Baker would each hit four threes to combine for eight of the Golden Eagles 11 made threes on the game. 
23 – Gabe Meriwether beat his career high for points that he set last time out, scoring 23 in the win making 15 free throws in 17 attempts. 

What's Next? 
Cornerstone has earned home court advantage throughout the conference tournament as they will host an opponent yet to be determined in the WHAC Quarterfinals on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
