ALMA, Mich. – The Golden Eagles started off hot, winning the first two doubles matches. In singles play, CU lost the first singles match but was able to battle and win three straight matches to secure the win against Alma. The end of the match was capped off with two hard fought loses by No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Cornerstone will have a week to rest before their match on February 23 on the road at University of Northwestern Ohio.
Doubles Highlights– The first doubles match was hard fought for
Valentina Garcia and
Marissa Hooker, winning 8-7 by dominating the 8-point tiebreaker, 8-4.
Nicole VerHulst and
Olivia Kelley kept the momentum going for CU, winning their match 8-3. Cornerstone lost the third and final doubles match, meaning that they would need half of the singles flights to win in order for CU to come out on top.
Singles Highlights– Singles was started with No. 1 singles losing and No. 2 singles winning, both in straight sets. The No. 2 singles win for Freshman,
Olivia Kelley, marked her fifth singles victory already this season. Cornerstone won the next two singles matches which secured the five wins they needed to beat Alma. The final matches for CU were No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Both
Amanda VerHulst and
Abbie Meeuwsen were taken down in three set battles to end singles play.
Cornerstone will play their next match at University of Northwestern Ohio on February 23.
