Five players make CU debuts in Softball opening day

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Golden Eagles opened up their season with a pair of games in the Sunshine state on Friday afternoon. Five different players made their Cornerstone debuts: Ashley Loera, Allisen Martz, and Kaitlin Johnson made their freshmen debuts; Red-shirt freshman Jocelyn Hernandez made her first appearance after sitting out last year; Junior transfer Alessa Baldwin-Buchner also made her debut in a CU uniform. The Golden Eagles dropped the opener to Spring Arbor 3-0 before falling to Mount Vernon Nazarene by a score of 5-0. The team will return to the field for a pair of early games tomorrow morning at 9:30 and 11:30 against St. Thomas and MVNU, respectively. 

Game 1: Spring Arbor 3 – Cornerstone 0
  • Spring Arbor got on the board in the first inning with an RBI single
  • McKena Razenberg and Maddie Vassar started off the third inning with back-to-back base hits, but the rally quickly fizzled.
  • Spring Arbor added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
  • Cornerstone had only one hit in the final four innings.
  • Ashley Loera pitched 1.2 innings of relief in her collegiate debut.

Game 2: Mount Vernon Nazarene 5 – Cornerstone 0
  • Kaitlin Johnson made her first collegiate start, allowing six hits and five runs.
  • MVNU put up four runs in the second inning then another one in the fourth.
  • Johnson had the only hit of the game for CU, with a base hit in the third inning.

By the Numbers
  • Razenberg had a hit and two walks for .500 on-base percentage
  • Alicia Ontiveros had two sacrifice hits. Last year, Ontiveros led the team with 15 sacrifice hits in 32 games.
  • Ontiveros and Loera both had three assists in the infield with no errors.

What's Next?
The Golden Eagles will be back in Clermont for a pair of early games tomorrow, Saturday March 2. They'll take on St. Thomas at 9:00 before a rematch with MVNU at 11:30. Both games will have live stats and updates available on Twitter.
