Sanchez helps Softball to split at TIU

WHEELING, Ill. – The Golden Eagles played a non-conference doubleheader against Trinity International on Thursday evening. Cornerstone overcame a six-run deficit to take the first game in extra innings before falling short in game two by a score of 7-4. The Golden Eagles (6-10) will prepare for a busy week next week that features four doubleheaders, including the home opener on Tuesday vs. Cleary and the WHAC opener on Wednesday at Rochester.

Game 1: Cornerstone 10 – Trinity International 7 (9 innings)
  • The Trojans struck first with a two-RBI triple in the 2nd inning.
  • Sierra Sanchez got CU on the board with a two-out RBI single up the middle to make it 2-1 in the the top of the 4th inning
  • Trinity piled on five runs in the 4th inning to take a 7-1 lead after four innings.
  • Cornerstone had a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning, scoring three runs thanks to RBI singles from Moriah Wilke and Maddie Vassar and an RBI triple by Rachel Younts to cut the deficit to 7-4.
  • The Golden Eagles completed the comeback with three runs in the 7th inning to force extra innings.
  • Sierra Sanchez ripped a two-RBI triple to left field to give CU the lead in the 9th inning. Moriah Wilke added her third RBI of the game to make it 10-7.
  • Ashley Loera earned her third win of the season in the circle. The freshman pitched the final six innings, did not surrender a run and only allowed four hits. 

Game 2: Cornerstone 4 – Trinity International 7
  • The Trojans scored the game's first seven runs, highlighted by another five-run 4th inning.
  • The Golden Eagles sent all nine batters to the plate in the 6th inning, scoring three runs to make it 7-3.
  • CU tacked on another run in the 7th but ultimately fell short.

2 – Two doubles for Courtney Ducharme in game two. Since starting the season 0-for-9 at the plate, Ducharme has hits in five straight games played, going 9-for-16 at the plate over that stretch.
