Softball swept by Cleary in home opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles welcomed the Cleary Cougars to the turf on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader. Cleary spoiled the home opener by sweeping the doubleheader with 5-2 and 12-2 victories over Cornerstone. The Golden Eagles will be right back at it tomorrow on the road at Rochester for the WHAC opener at 3:30 p.m. CU is scheduled to play WHAC doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday on the CU Softball turf but stay tuned to cugoldeneagles.com for potential schedule changes due to weather conditions.

Game 1: Cornerstone 2 – Cleary 5
  • Cleary jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning.
  • Jocelyn Hernandez drove in her 11th run of the campaign with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • Ashley Loera prevented the Cougars from adding to their lead by pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the 4th inning.
  • Moriah Wilke drove in Alessa Baldwin-Buchner to tie the game at 2-2 in the 4th inning.
  • Cleary quickly reestablished their lead by plating three runs in the 5th inning to take a 5-2 advantage.
  • The Golden Eagles failed to reach base in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings

Game 2: Cornerstone 2 – Cleary 12 (6 innings)
  • Cleary once again jumped out to an early lead by plating three runs in the 1st inning and one in the 2nd.
  • Hannah May helped chisel the deficit to 4-2 in the 4th inning by hitting an RBI single to left field.
  • The Cougars brought the lead back to four with a two-run home run in the 5th inning.
  • As a team, Cleary hit for the cycle in the 6th inning with a home run, a triple, a double, and a single for a total of six runs to make it 12-2.

7 – Seven-game hitting streak for Courtney Ducharme after recording a hit in each game against Cleary.
3 – Three hits for Alicia Ontiveros on the day, with a pair in game one and a base hit in game two.
12 – Twelve runs surrendered ties a season-high for CU, who also surrendered 12 to Marian on March 9
4 –  Four errors committed in game two ties a season-high for CU, who also committed four against St. Thomas on March 2

The Golden Eagles (6-12) will travel to Rochester for the WHAC opener tomorrow afternoon.
