Baseball earns split in WHAC opening series at Lourdes

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Golden Eagles came out of the gate firing in game one, earning a 10-0 win in eight innings behind a career high nine strikeouts from starting pitcher Collin Young. In game two, the CU offense was held to just three hits as they would fall by a score of 5-1. With the split, Cornerstone is now 8-13, 1-1 WHAC. The team will now get set for three consecutive home series, including the home opener vs. Madonna on Tuesday at 1 p.m. 

Game One
  • After a leadoff walk by Dustin DeBeau and a single by Aaron Krupansky, Cornerstone found the scoreboard first thanks to a Joe Corsten sacrifice fly in the top of the first that scored the pinch runner Chase Mitchell to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • With two more walks and a single by Trenton Gilman in the top of the second, CU scored two more runs highlighted by a Gabe Zeiger RBI single making the score 3-0. 
  • The offense continued to find runs in the third, scoring a run on a Trenton Gilman RBI single, an Austin Hurt sacrifice fly, and a Gabe Zeiger RBI single to lead 6-0.
  • The offense slowed down until the top of the sixth, when CU took advantage of a struggling Lourdes defense with a double steal attempt that allowed Gabe Zeiger to come home and make the score 7-0. 
  • Brandon Hepp joined the RBI club in the top of the eighth inning, with a double that scored Aaron Krupansky to give the Golden Eagles the 8-0 lead. 
  • Another top of the eighth inning double, this time by Trevor Bastien, scored two more runs to get the Golden Eagles to 10 runs in the game. 
  • Starting pitcher Collin Young shut down the Lourdes offense in one of the best outings of his career, pitching a complete game of eight innings with a career high nine strikeouts while walking just two batters in a 10-0 mercy rule win for the Golden Eagles. 
 

Game Two 
  • Both teams went through the first inning scoreless, but Lourdes would plate their first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from Childress. 
  • Cornerstone starter Chandler McKinney would face a few more challenging innings, but kept the deficit to 1-0 after three innings of play. 
  • In the fourth inning however, the Gray Wolves found the scoreboard for the second time thanks to an RBI double from Denman that scored Childress and made the score 2-0. 
  • After a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt given up by starter Chandler McKinney, Noah Reed would enter the game in relief. Reed gave up an RBI double to his first batter faced that allowed LU to go up 3-0. 
  • Cornerstone got themselves on the board in the top of the sixth when pinch runner Chase Mitchell took advantage of a defensive lapse stealing home to cut the deficit to 3-1. 
  • The Gray Wolves added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth with a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to increase their lead to 5-1. 
  • CU got a runner on in the top of the ninth but could not bring any runs across the plate, falling 5-1 in game two. 
 
By the Numbers 
3 – Aaron Krupasnky and Gabe Zeiger each recorded three hit games in game one. 
 
9 – The Golden Eagles stole nine bases on the day, six in game one and three in game two. 
 
5 – Aaron Krupansky totaled five hits on the day, recording two of the Golden Eagles three hits in game two. 
 
2/7 – CU walked just two batters in game one and walked seven in game two. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone will begin a stretch of six straight home games, in a rescheduled conference double-header against Madonna on Tuesday starting at 1 p.m.
