Softball outslugged by UNOH

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles continued their homestand on Saturday with a doubleheader against UNOH. Cornerstone recorded 29 hits and 20 runs on the day but ultimately fell short in both games to drop to 7-17 overall, 1-5 WHAC. Cornerstone will wrap up the homestand on Wednesday afternoon when they host their cross-town rivals from Aquinas.

Game 1: Cornerstone 12 – UNOH 14
  • The Racers recorded 15 hits and 13 runs over the course of the first three innings.
  • Sierra Sanchez hit her first home run of the season in the 3rd inning
  • UNOH took a commanding 14-3 lead in the 4th inning
  • Lexi Lieske, Aliyah Lemmer, Moriah Wilke, and McKena Razenberg all had RBI hits in the 5th inning to avoid a mercy rule, extending the game with a 14-7 score.
  • Cornerstone continued to chisel away at the once 11-run deficit with five more runs in the 6th inning to make it a 14-12 game. Kailin Hurrle recorded her first career RBI while seniors Rachel Chriss and Madison Gallagher tallied their first hits of the season during the rally. 
  • After holding the Racers scoreless in the top of the 7th inning, the Golden Eagles brought the game-tying run to the plate but the comeback fell short.

Game 2: Cornerstone 8 – UNOH 12
  • UNOH took a 1-0 lead after the first inning when Lauren Massolini hit a solo home run to right center.
  • Hannah May responded with a two-run home run in the second inning to give Cornerstone its first lead of the day.
  • UNOH regained the lead in the 3rd inning when Massolini hit her second long ball of the game, a two-run homer to right field.
  • Sierra Sanchez joined the slugfest with a solo shot to right field in the 3rd inning to tie it at 3-3.
  • After the Racers grabbed a 4-3 advantage, Kaitlin Johnson hit an RBI double to the right center gap to even the game at 4-4
  • An RBI triple by Hannah May highlighted a three-run 5th inning for the Golden Eagles, putting CU up 7-4.
  • The Racers piled on ten unanswered runs in the 6th and 7th innings to build a commanding 14-7 lead.
  • Lexi Lieske hit her first home run of the season and the third home run of the game for Cornerstone in the 7th inning but the rally fell short





By the Numbers
12 & 18 - Cornerstone recorded season-highs in RBI and hits in game one.
8 - Aliyah Lemmer extended her hit streak to eight games with a career-high three hits in game one and another in game two.
7 - Seven total bases for Hannah May in game two with her first home run and triple in a Golden Eagle uniform.
2 - Sierra Sanchez had a home run in each game
12 - The Golden Eagles had 12 extra-base hits on the day (4 HR, 3 triples, 5 doubles)

What's Next?
The Golden Eagles (7-17 overall, 1-5 WHAC) will host Aquinas on Wednesday afternoon before hitting the road for five consecutive WHAC doubleheaders.
