GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles hosted their cross-town rivals from Aquinas on Wednesday afternoon at the CU Softball field. Cornerstone erased a late 6-1 deficit in game one to force extra innings before falling 10-8 in the 11th inning. Game two saw Aquinas put up multiple runs in every inning for a shortened 12-1 game by mercy. The pair of losses drops Cornerstone's record to 7-19 overall, 1-7 WHAC. The team will play five consecutive WHAC doubleheaders on the road, starting with Lourdes on Friday.
Game 1: Cornerstone 8 – Aquinas 10 (11 innings)
- Maddie Vassar led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a triple before scoring off a sac fly by Alicia Ontiveros.
- Aquinas led 6-1 after five complete innings, thanks in part to a pair of two-run home runs.
- Sierra Sanchez and Courtney Ducharme hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the 6th inning. Hannah May added two more runs with a bases-loaded, two-RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-5 after six innings.
- With two outs and the game-tying run on second base, Sierra Sanchez hit a clutch RBI single to send the game to extra innings.
- Aquinas took a 7-6 advantage in the top of the 9th, but Courtney Ducharme was able to even the score at 7-7 with a sacrifice fly to keep the game alive.
- The Saints scored three runs--two of which were unearned--in the top of the 11th inning.
- Cornerstone was able to get one run back on a wild pitch, but the Saints' defense left the game-tying runs in scoring position to end the game.
- Freshman Ashley Loera recorded a career-high four strikeouts in 6.2 innings of relief in the circle.
Game 2: Cornerstone 1 – Aquinas 12 (5 innings)
- Aquinas came out swinging in the 1st inning with five hits and three runs in the opening frame before tacking on a pair of runs in both the 2nd and 3rd innings.
- The Golden Eagles got on the board in the 3rd inning to cut the deficit to 7-1.
- The Saints scored three runs in the 4th and two more in the 5th to end the game by mercy.
