Softball falls to TIU, defeats Carlow

CLERMONT, Fla. – After a brief weather delay, the Golden Eagles were able to play their games on Tuesday morning. Cornerstone came up short against Trinity International in the first game by a score of 8-3, then defeated Carlow 3-1 in the second game to salvage a split for the second consecutive day. The Golden Eagles (2-6) will have an off day on Wednesday before taking on Grace College and William Woods University on Thursday afternoon.

Game 1: Trinity International 8 – Cornerstone 3
  • Trinity International got on the board first with two runs in the 3rd inning.
  • The Trojans piled on five runs for a 7-0 lead in the 5th inning, but Ashley Loera was able to limit the damage by ending the inning with a bases-loaded strikeout.
  • Alessa Baldwin-Buchner got the Golden Eagles on the board with an RBI double to left center in the fifth inning.
  • Mackenzie Vallad followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2.
  • Each team scored one run in the sixth inning, with CU's run coming from an RBI single by Courtney Ducharme.

Game 2: Cornerstone 3 – Carlow 1
  • Cornerstone put up all three runs in the third inning.
  • Baldwin-Buchner once again started the scoring with an RBI, this time with a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • Vallad followed Baldwin-Buchner with an RBI double down the left field line.
  • Courtney Ducharme gave herself run support by driving in an Vallad with a bloop single.
  • The Golden Eagles maintained the shutout until the 7th inning, when Carlow brought around an unearned run.
  • With the potential game-tying runners in scoring position, Ducharme ended the game by getting a flyout to right field.
  • Ducharme pitching line: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 4 K….First career win in the circle.
