Softball outslugged in two heartbreaking losses

MINNEOLA, Fla. – The Golden Eagles suffered two heartbreaking losses on Friday in the second to last day of Florida action. A walkoff grand slam boosted the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans over CU by a score of 7-6 in the first game. In game two, after the Golden Eagles took a 9-8 lead in the 8th inning against Saint Francis, the Cougars scored a controversial game-tying run at home plate before walking off with an RBI single. The pair of setbacks brings Cornerstone's record to 4-8 heading to the final day of the spring break trip. Cornerstone will wrap up the trip with Calumet St. Joseph at 9:15 and #6 Marian at 11:30.

Game 1: Cornerstone 6 -- Hannibal-LaGrange 7
  • Hannibal-LaGrange started off the scoring with a three-run home run in the 3rd inning.
  • Cornerstone had a two-out rally in the 4th inning that evened the game up at 3-3 thanks to back-to-back RBI hits from Rachel Younts and McKena Razenberg.
  • Sierra Sanchez started the 6th inning with a pinch-hit double off the fence in right field. Maddie Vassar drove her in with an infield single. Vassar then scored on an RBI single by Alessa Baldwin-Buchner. Another unearned run made it 6-3 Cornerstone heading into the 7th inning.
  • The first three Trojans reached base in the bottom of the 7th inning, setting up a walkoff grand slam that soared over the fence in left field.

Game 2: Cornerstone 9 – Saint Francis (Ind.) 10   (8 innings)
  • The Cougars opened the scoring with an RBI double in the 1st inning
  • McKena Razenberg hit a bases-clearing, three-RBI double in the 2nd inning before scoring via an error on the same play.
  • A grand slam highlighted a five-run 2nd inning for the Cougars to make it 6-4.
  • Sierra Sanchez cut the deficit to 6-5 with a groundout in the 4th inning.
  • In the 5th inning, Jocelyn Hernandez hit the team's first home run of the season, a three-run moonshot to left field to give Cornerstone an 8-6 lead.
  • Saint Francis scored a pair of unearned runs to even the game at 8-8 heading into the 7th inning.
  • With the international tiebreaker rule in effect in the eighth inning, the Golden Eagles got their runner home to take a 9-8 lead.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Saint Francis scored the game-tying run on a controversial call at home plate before handing CU their second walkoff loss of the day.
