Softball falls in pair of games at Cleary

HOWELL, Mich. – The Golden Eagles brought their losing streak to five straight today, losing a pair of tough WHAC games at Cleary on Wednesday afternoon. The CU offense struggled to find their grove as they fell 7-2 in game one and 9-1 in game two (5 innings). Cornerstone is now 8-24 on the year and 2-12 in WHAC play as they will continue their roadtrip at Concordia on Friday starting at 3:30 p.m.

Game 1: Cornerstone 2 – Cleary 7

  • Cleary scored first on an infield single in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

  • CU quickly responded with a solo homerun from Lexi Lieske.

  • Both starters in Ashley Loera and Natalie O'Reilly then dominated the game keeping it tied at one through five innings of play.

  • Lexi Lieske then scored her second run of the day on a Courtney Ducharme fielder's choice that gave the Golden Eagles the 2-1 lead.

  • Cleary then erupted for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-2 lead.

  • CU was unable to get any runs back and would fall 7-2 in game one.
     



Game 2: Cornerstone 1 – Cleary 9 (in five innings)

  • Cornerstone got on the board first in game two scoring their first and only run of the game on a Cleary fielding that scored Mackenzie Vallad.

  • Starter Rachel Younts would not be able to keep Cleary from taking over the game however, as they scored seven runs in the third inning highlighted by a two RBI double to go on top 7-1.

  • Cleary added two more runs in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead.

  • CU was unable to find the scoreboard again, resulting in an early exit for the Golden Eagles, falling 9-1 in five innings.
     

By the Numbers

2 - Lexi Lieske hit her second HR of the season in game one.

14 - CU has now had 14 games this season where they have scored two or less runs.

6 - Cornerstone had six hits in each game today for a total of 12 on the day.

3 - Of the three runs scored by CU on the day Lexi Lieske scored two of them.


What's Next?

The Golden Eagles continue a busy road trip at Concordia on Friday with a double-header starting at 3:30 p.m.
