GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After two full weeks away from their home turf, the Golden Eagles returned to the CU Softball Field on Wednesday for a WHAC doubleheader. Madonna took the first game 5-1 before putting up eight unanswered runs for an 8-4 victory in game two. The pair of losses sets Cornerstone's record to 8-30 overall, 2-18 WHAC heading into the Saturday afternoon's WHAC finale against Lawrence Tech.
Game 1: Cornerstone 1 – Madonna 5
- Madonna struck first with a run in the 2nd inning with an RBI single to right field.
- The Crusaders tacked on two more runs with a bases-loaded single in the 3rd inning to go up 3-0.
- Middle infielders Maddie Vassar and Alicia Ontiveros turned a double play to get the defense out of the 5th inning.
- Vassar led off the 6th inning with a base hit up the middle. After a stolen base and an error, she found herself on third base. Lexi Lieske drove her in with a suicide squeeze bunt to put CU on the board.
- Madonna added an insurance run in the 7th inning to secure a 5-1 victory.
- Ashley Loera pitched all seven innings, surrendering six hits and four earned runs.
Game 2: Cornerstone 4 – Madonna 8
- The Golden Eagles sent all nine batters to the plate in the 1st inning for four runs. Courtney Ducharme and Savanna Sanchez both contributed with RBI singles.
- The Crusaders plated two unearned runs in the 2nd inning
- A three-run 4th inning gave Madonna a 5-4 lead, their first lead of the game
- Madonna put up another three spot in the 5th inning to double up CU by a score of 8-4.
- Chelsea Harrison pitched two hitless innings in relief for the Golden Eagles.
By the Numbers

Maddie Vassar in game one. Vassar's three hits on the day put her at 40 hits on the season, the first Golden Eagle since 2016 to reach that plateau.

The Golden Eagles (8-30, 2-18 WHAC) will conclude WHAC play on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. at the CU Softball Field. Senior day festivities will take place in between games.
