Softball swept by receiving votes Siena Heights

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Golden Eagles continued their road trip on Saturday with a pair of conference competitions against WHAC-leading Siena Heights, who is receiving votes nationally. Game one ended after five innings by mercy rule before the Golden Eagles came up short in game two by a score of 4-2. Cornerstone (8-22, 2-10 WHAC) will continue the road stretch with three more road WHAC doubleheaders next week.

Game 1: Cornerstone 3 – #RV Siena Heights 11 (5 innings)
  • Siena Heights got on the board in the 2nd inning with a pair of unearned runs.
  • With the bases loaded and two outs for CU in the top of the 3rd, Aliyah Lemmer drove in one with a fielder's choice before Moriah Wilke gave Cornerstone a 3-2 lead with a two-RBI double to right field.
  • Ashley Helmink, the WHAC's leader in slugging percentage and RBIs, hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 3rd to put the Saints up 4-3.
  • Siena Heights doubled their score with four more runs in the 4th inning to go up 8-3.
  • Three more unearned runs in the 5th inning ended the game by mercy rule.

Game 2: Cornerstone 2 – #RV Siena Heights 4
  • Two Golden Eagles were stranded in scoring position in the top of the 1st.
  • Siena Heights plated two runs in the bottom of the 1st, but Kaitlin Johnson was able to limit the damage by leaving the bases loaded.
  • Jocelyn Hernandez hit a solo home run to left field to cut the Saints' lead in half in the top of the 2nd.
  • After leading off the 3rd inning with a single, Aliyah Lemmer came home on a wild pitch to even the score at 2-2.
  • Siena Heights recorded the go-ahead and insurance runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, respectively, both by sacrifice flies.
  • Johnson surrendered six hits and two earned runs over three innings before handing the pitching duties off to Ashley Loera, who allowed only one hit and one earned run over the final three innings.

By the Numbers
30 – Vassar's three hits on the day made her the first Golden Eagle of the season to the 30-hit plateau.
7 – Seventh loss of the season by a deficit of two runs or less.
4 – Fourth home run of the season and fourth multi-hit game of the season for Jocelyn Hernandez in game two.
12 – Twelve straight games – every conference game – where McKena Razenberg has reached base safely.
9-7 – The Golden Eagles outhit the Saints by two in game two.


What's Next?
The Golden Eagles (8-22, 2-10 WHAC) will play three more WHAC doubleheaders on the road next week with Cleary on Wednesday, Concordia on Friday, and UM-Dearborn on Saturday.
