Rivalry match on tap to open WHAC season for Volleyball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles are set to open the conference season with a bang as they will take on rival No. 16 Aquinas College inside Mol Arena on Wednesday, September 11 at 7 p.m. Cornerstone and Aquinas have a lot to play for as the two teams last met in the WHAC Tournament Championship in 2018. Both teams will be sporting a new coaching staff as well as, Cornerstone freshman Patsy Morris will be taking on her sister senior Karly Morris for the first time ever. Cornerstone Student Activities will be providing snacks for all students in attendance and the Stone Zone will be hosting a whiteout for the event.

Quick Facts: 
  • Cornerstone will be taking on some familiar faces, as former Head Coach Ryan Campbell and Assistant Coach Jenni Shepherd will man the sidelines for Aquinas. 
  • Olivia Keelean recorded her first two double-digit kill matches with 14 vs. Marian and 11 vs. Thomas More. 
  • Alexis Angus continues to lead the Golden Eagles in hitting percentage at .302 this season, with a team high 72 kills including a career high 18 against IU-Kokomo.
  • Cornerstone currently ranks second in the WHAC in blocks per set with 2.4, which is also good for 17thin the NAIA.
  • Cornerstone went 1-3 in the AQ/CU Invitational this weekend to move their record to 3-5 overall. The team is 1-3 this season against NAIA Top 25/RV opponents. 

Opponent Facts: 
  • After winning the WHAC Regular Season Title in 2018, Aquinas was selected to repeat as champion and ranked 16thoverall in the NAIA Preseason Poll. 
  • Aquinas has gotten off to a slow start this season at 3-6 overall, also going 1-3 in the AQ/CU Invitational this past weekend. 
  • AQ swept Cornerstone in the WHAC opener last season on Aquinas' home court. 
  • Junior middle hitter Kylie Christensen currently leads the WHAC with a .357 hitting percentage and is fifth in the conference in total kills with 103.
