GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles opened their home slate on Wednesday afternoon against Olivet Nazarene, who recently earned receiving-votes status in the NAIA Men's Soccer poll. After falling behind 1-0 at halftime, Cornerstone was able to take a 2-1 advantage before the Tigers evened the game in the waning minutes of regulation to force overtime. A few attempts from both sides nearly sealed the game in sudden death, but the match ended in a 2-2 draw. The Golden Eagles improve to 0-4-1 heading into Friday evening's home match vs. Marian.
The Highlights:
- Olivet Nazarene found the back of the net midway through the first half to take a 1-0 advantage at the break.
- Olivet Nazarene held a comfortable 7-2 edge in shots at halftime.
- Just four minutes into the second frame, David Dwumfour-Poku found the back of the net off an assist from Abe House to even the match at 1-1.
- Shortly after a four-minute stretch that featured three shot and two corner kicks for CU, Davin McMullin sent a long pass to Welamaza Magwentshu, who broke through the defense and fired in the go-ahead goal with 13:50 to play in regulation.
- With less than two minutes to play, Olivet Nazarene evened the game off a loose scramble in the box.
- Cornerstone held an 8-6 shot advantage in the second half.
- Micah Boggs had a fantastic scoring opportunity early in overtime but the ONU keeper was able to get a hand on it.
