Men's Soccer comeback falls short to Marian in 2OT

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles took on Marian University on Friday evening at Forest Hills Central High School. Sophomores Davin McMullin and Luke Blickley both scored their first collegiate goals to force overtime, but the Knights halted the comeback with the game-winner in double overtime. The loss sets the Golden Eagles back to 0-5-1 on the season heading into another off-week before traveling to Indiana University Northwest on September 21 to conclude non-conference play.

The Highlights:
  • Marian got on board when a 40-yard Marian free kick deflected off a Cornerstone defender and into the back of the net in the 18th minute.
  • Shortly thereafter, A Marian player dribbled through the Cornerstone defense before crossing the ball to a wide open teammate to double the lead to two.
  • Less than five minutes later, Cornerstone cut the deficit in half. Welamaza Magwentshu sent a cross to Davin McMullin, who buried the shot for his first collegiate goal at the 25:10 mark of the first half to make it 2-1.
  • Marian nearly took a 3-1 lead with 13 minutes to play in the first frame after the Knights dribbled past keeper Joshua Mitchell, but a sprawling play by defender Logan Johns heroically kept the score at 2-1.
  • The Golden Eagles first legitimate scoring chance of the second half came off a corner kick.
  • After several scoring chances late in regulation, the Golden Eagles finally caught a break. Luke Blickley's free kick from about 30 yards out made it through a crowd and into the back of the net to tie the game up at 2-2 with 1:18 on the clock. The clutch goal was also Blickley's first collegiate tally.
  • In the 104th minute of play, Marian ended the golden-goal double overtime session with a goal off a set piece.
