Women's soccer open WHAC play with 3-1 victory over Siena Heights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone came out with a point to prove in their first WHAC match of the year, beating the Saints of Siena Heights by a score of 3-1. With the victory CU is now 7-1-0 to start the season and 1-0-0 in WHAC play. This was a big win for the Golden Eagles after preseason predictions placed Siena Heights 4th and CU 7th in the WHAC. Cornerstone's next match will be at Concordia University on Saturday with a noon kickoff.
 
The Highlights
  • Junior Grace Wiersema scored her first ever goal for Cornerstone in the 14th minute off of a corner kick scramble to give CU an early lead. A deflected shot by Erica Mick fell right to Wiersema's feet, who tapped it home with ease.
  • In the 23rd minute, Alexys Riksen took a Phoebe LaCroix through ball and slotted it home to make it 2-0 Cornerstone.
  • Riksen and LaCroix teamed up again in the 27th minute with LaCroix picking up the ball and carrying it half the field before playing Riksen through on goal. The senior calmly finished for her second goal of the match, making it 3-0 Golden Eagles going into halftime.
  • Senior Mya Copado picked up her first yellow card of the season in the 55th minute, the resulting free kick was saved by Mikayla Johnson.
  • A hand ball in the box by the Golden Eagles resulted in a Saints penalty kick which was scored by Julia Stancato in the 75th minute, cutting the Golden Eagles lead to 3-1.
  • Erica Mick also picked up first yellow card in the 87th minute, with Mikayla Johnson again making the save on the following free kick.

  • 2- The Golden Eagles registered two yellow cards today after previously having none this entire season.
  • 4- Goalkeeper Mikayla Johnson made 4 saves on the night, only being beaten on a penalty kick.
  • 9- Both Cornerstone and Siena Heights had nine shots in the match, with both teams putting five of those on target.
  • 22- With the two goals she scored today, senior Alexys Riksen now has 22 career goals for the Golden Eagles. Those 22 goals are 10th all time on Cornerstone's all-time rankings.
