Second half surge gives Men’s Basketball a Tolsma Tough victory

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a game that was just a little bit bigger for Cornerstone men's basketball, the Golden Eagles earned a 79-62 win over Lawrence Tech in a WHAC contest. CU played the #TolsmaTough game in honor of Head Coach Kim Elders niece Alexa Tolsma who has been battling cancer for the past 11 months. With the win, CU improves to 13-7, 7-4 WHAC as they get set to host Siena Heights on Wednesday for the annual Purple Games. 

What you need to know? 
  • Cornerstone got off to a good start as Brent Hibbitts hit the first three-point attempt of the game to give CU the early lead vs. Lawrence Tech. 
  • LTU then rattled off a 5-0 run to take their first lead at 7-5. 
  • The two teams then battled back and forth as the lead changed hands multiple times. Carter Nyp put threw down a dunk with emphasis to make it 21-17 with 10:15 to play in the first half. 
  • The game was tied at 23 for over a minute before Cory Ainsworth and Carter Nyp recorded back-to-back buckets to increase the CU lead back to four. 
  • Lawrence Tech called a full timeout with 5:17 to play in the half and Cornerstone leading 29-25. 
  • After the timeout, Jordan Henry hit a three for the Blue Devils to cut the CU lead back to just one at 29-28. 
  • At the half, Cornerstone held a 35-32 advantage. The team dominated the inside going 13-18 inside the arc and just 2-13 behind the arc. 
  • Lawrence Tech came out of the half with energy, going on a 5-0 run to take a 37-35 lead. 
  • Brent Hibbitts hit the first bucket of the second half just like he did in the first with a three to give Cornerstone the lead back at 38-37. 
  • Freshman Cory Ainsworth went to work in the second half, dominating the post to give CU a 44-41 advantage five minutes into the second half. 
  • Christian Rodriguez and Drew Knickerbocker each got fast break layups to increase the Cornerstone advantage to 53-46 for their largest lead of the game at seven. 
  • Carter Nyp hit a three and Cory Ainsworth recorded an and one to make it 59-46 with 9:28 to play and cap off a 10-0 run. 
  • Cornerstone continued to dominate the second half, going on a 19-7 run led by nine points from Cory Ainsworth to blow the game wide open and give the team a 20-point advantage. 
  • Brent Hibbitts threw down a monster dunk as an exclamation point with four minutes to play, making the score 74-53. 
  • Cornerstone went on to win 79-62, outscoring the Blue Devils 44-30 in the second half. 
 
 


By the Numbers 
  • Christian Rodriguez and Cory Ainsworth each had 22 points in the game to lead CU. 
  • Cory Ainsworth (5) and Carter Nyp (3) combined for the teams eight blocks on the game. 
  • Cornerstone's 79 points are the most they have scored in the last 13 games as they won 81-75 against Saint Xavier on November 9. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone will end a home stand vs. Siena Heights with another game with significant meaning. The team will continue to support those fighting cancer, playing in their annual purple game on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. where all proceeds from the event will go to the Van Andel Institute Purple Community.
