Second half surge pushes No. 24 Men’s Basketball past Concordia

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Cornerstone rebounded in a big way, using a second half surge to end a four-game road trip with a 70-61 win at Concordia. The Golden Eagles are now 11-7, 5-4 WHAC as they stay above .500 in the conference standings. Freshman Cory Ainsworth got his first collegiate start in the win and tallied a game high 18 points in the win on 9-12 shooting. CU will return home on Saturday for a rivalry game vs. Aquinas at 3 p.m. 

What you need to know? 
  • Christian Rodriguez hit a three in the early going to give CU a 9-5 lead roughly five minutes into the first half. 
  • Concordia went on a 10-0 run to respond to the Golden Eagles to go on top 15-9. 
  • Concordia maintained the lead for the majority of the first half until Gabe Meriwether hit a layup with just under a minute remaining to give CU the 31-30 advantage. 
  • The Golden Eagles took the 31-30 lead into the break. Cory Ainsworth recorded a team high eight points on 4-6 shooting in the first half. 
  • Tyler Baker and Cory Ainsworth helped Cornerstone get out to a strong start in the second half each scoring a pair of buckets to increase their lead to as many as five. 
  • Cornerstone continued to slowly pull away in the first 10 minutes of the second half as Carter Nyp scored a bucket to make it 45-37 for the Golden Eagles largest lead of the game.
  • CU then got hot offensively, going on a 7-0 run highlighted by five points from Nick Dekkenga to take a 55-40 advantage and force the Cardinals into a timeout. 
  • Concordia tried to come back, but the Golden Eagles were dominant inside, scoring 38 points in the paint with four minutes to play and outrebounding the Cardinals 39-32. 
  • The Cardinals cut it to single digits in the final few minutes, but strong free throw shooting by CU helped them hold on to earn a 70-61 road win to end the four-game road trip. 
 

By the Numbers 
  • Four Golden Eagles scored in double-figures including a game high 18 from Cory Ainsworth in his first collegiate start and a career high 12 from Nick Dekkenga off the bench. 
  • Carter Nyp was a point away from recording a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds in the win. 
  • Christian Rodriguez led the team with five assists. 
  • Cory Ainsworth was 9-12 from the field for the second most made field goals in his short career. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone returns home to take on rival Aquinas at 3 p.m. this Saturday, January 11 for the first of two matchups in the 2019-20 season.
