Helder scores a game winner in Women’s Soccer 3-2 win vs. Concordia

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – Sophomore Laura Helder who has battled injury early in her career was the hero in the Golden Eagles first home game of 2020 scoring an overtime goal to push CU past Concordia 3-2 and break a five-game losing streak. The goal was Helder's first of her collegiate career and gives the Golden Eagles a 2-0-0 record to start the season. The team will now have 10 days off before traveling to Lawrence Tech for a Tuesday conference game that will begin at 7 p.m. 
 
The Highlights:
  • The game got off to a quick start with both teams seeing multiple offensive chances. Cornerstone got on the board first with a goal from Erica Mick inside the 18 off the cross from Laura Helder
  • Concordia was able to create multiple break away chances after the goal by CU but senior keeper Mikayla Johnson made some great saves to keep CU on top 1-0. 
  • Concordia finally got a ball past Johnson in the 18th minute as Samantha Gulchuk headed the ball in off a throw in to tie the game 1-1. 
  • In the 24th minute a resilient Golchuk found the net a second time putting the ball in on her own rebound to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. 
  • The substitute Kylie Adams tied the game back up for the Golden Eagles in the 32nd minute on a pass from Jozlyn Vantol to make it 2-2 at the half. 
  • Chances slowed down for both sides in the second half as a total of only four shots were made in the in the first 25 minutes. 
  • The second half ended in a 2-2 tie with Cornerstone recording 14 shots and Concordia recording 12. The two teams entered overtime for the first time in 2020. 
  • It did not take long for golden goal to take effect, as roughly five minutes into the first overtime period Laura Helder scored off a rebound from the Concordia keeper for her first collegiate goal and the game winner against the Cardinals to make the final score 3-2. 
 

By the Numbers:
8 – Erica Mick scored her eighth collegiate goal with the first of the game. 
9 – Kylie Adams scored her ninth collegiate goal with the game tying goal. 
8 – Mikayla Johnson made eight incredible saves in the win and moves to 2-0-0 in net this year. 
15-12 – CU outshot Concordia 15 to 12 on the game. 
 
What's next? 
Cornerstone will have to wait another 10 days for a game as they will travel to Lawrence Tech on Tuesday, October 20 for a 7 p.m. match next week.
