SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – In a battle of two undefeated WHAC teams, the Golden Eagles were forced to settle for a tie at Lawrence Tech 1-1 in double overtime. Both teams found the net early in the first half but the defenses stepped up in the second half and overtimes to end the game in a tie. Cornerstone is now 2-0-1 on the year as they will play their final home game of the fall vs. Siena Heights for the BOGO Night this Friday at 7 p.m.
The Highlights:
- Lawrence Tech got off to a quick start, scoring 56 seconds into the game on a perfectly placed shot in the side netting from senior Rebekah Holbrook off the assist from Jenny Dear.
- Cornerstone saw their first chance of the game 18 minutes in with a 2-1 breakaway that resulted in a shot from Jozlyn VanTol. LTU keeper Rebecca Almandoz did well to stay on her line however and make the save to keep the Blue Devils on top 1-0.
- After a few more chances by the Golden Eagles, a great give and go between Erica Mick and Jozlyn VanTol resulted in a 22nd minute equalizer from VanTol that hit the post and drizzled in for her first of the season.
- Cornerstone consistently maintained possession in the final 20 minutes of the first half, but were unable to score again as the two teams went into the break tied at 1-1.
- The first 15 minutes of the second half were much slower as both teams made defensive adjustments to limit offensive chances.
- VanTol saw the best chance mid second half but her header went wide of the net keeping it 1-1.
- On a free kick in the 83rd minute Mya Copado sent a great ball into the box that again was headed just wide keeping things tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.
- In the first overtime Cornerstone two chances hit off the bar, but neither snuck into the net keeping the game tied and going to a second overtime.
- Lawrence Tech put the pressure on for most of the second overtime period but could not find the net as the game concluded at a 1-1 final.
By the Numbers:
- 3 – Jozlyn VanTol and Erica Mick tie Laura Helder for the team lead of three points with all having one goal and one assist.
- 2-1 – Mikayla Johnson played the first half and made two saves, while Hope Steenwyk saw her first time this season and made one save in the second half and two overtimes.
- 10-6 – Jozlyn VanTol recorded 10 shots in the game and had six on net.
- 18-10 – CU outshot Lawrence Tech 18-11 on the night.
- 10-23-18 – Cornerstone's last tie came against the very same Blue Devils on October 23, 2018.
What's next?
Cornerstone heads back to Grand Rapids for the final home match of the fall season as they will take on Siena Heights for the Friendship Sports International BOGO Night and Senior Night. Action will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 23 with senior day festivities beginning 15 minutes before kickoff.
