Men's Soccer routs Concordia 5-0 in home opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the first time in 227 days, the campus of Cornerstone University hosted a varsity athletics contest on Saturday, as the Men's Soccer team took on Concordia. Five different players found the back of the net for Cornerstone, including three in a seven-minute span late in the game. The Golden Eagles (1-1) will step away from WHAC action for a non-conference contest against Olivet Nazarene on Wednesday, October 21 before concluding the fall portion of the season with three more WHAC matches.

The Highlights:
  • In the 16th minute of action, Allan Barrientos sent a pass to an oncoming Luke Blickley, who took a couple touches before burying one into the back of the net to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
  • Concordia had their fair share of opportunities in the first half, most notably off a set piece with 20 minutes to play. The kicker's attempt drilled the right post and ricocheted across the goal mouth but stayed out.
  • With just under eight minutes to go in the first half, David Dwumfour-Poku led a rush from one end of the field to the other. The senior forward crossed the ball to Roberto Razo, who headed the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0.
  • In the 77th minute, Nate Kaercher scored a header off a volley pass from Christian Galloway along the baseline.
  • Logan Johns joined the scoring with a header of his own, this time off a set piece sent in by David Chung Liang Mawi, making it 4-0 with less than 10 minutes to play.
  • The Golden Eagles capped off the scoring when Kaercher capitalized on a loose ball and fed Mawi, who finished it off to make it 5-0.

By the Numbers:
18-7 – The Golden Eagles outshot the Cardinals by 11.
10 – Ten shots on goal is the most by Cornerstone in a home game since November 5, 2016.
3 – Three of the five goals were scored by headers.
1 & 1 – Razo and Mawi each had one goal and one assist.
5 – The five-goal margin of victory matches last year's 5-0 victory against IU-Northwest.
