SYLVANIA, Ohio – After six weeks of training since mid-August, the Women's Soccer team's efforts paid off on Saturday evening with a 1-0 victory in the season opener at Lourdes. Freshman
Sierah Adams scored the lone goal of the contest in the 85th minute off a volley from the corner of the 18-yard box to push the Golden Eagles over the Gray Wolves. Cornerstone will return to action on Saturday, October 10 to host Concordia.
The Highlights:
- Lourdes had four corner kick opportunities in the first half, but senior goalkeeper Mikayla Johnson and the Cornerstone defense were able to keep the ball out of their net.
- The Gray Wolves nearly found the back of the net in the 59th minute but the shot attempt hit the post and stayed out.
- In her collegiate debut, Sierah Adams wound up a volley attempt in the 85th minute from 25 yards out. The shot floated over the Lourdes keeper's head and into the back of the net.
- With less than a minute to play in the game, Lourdes had a long set piece opportunity. Amidst a crowd of players, Mikayla Johnson came out and attempted to snatch the ball out of the air, but a ricochet led to a golden opportunity for the Gray Wolves. The attacker struck the ball towards a goalie-less frame, but defender Madissen Kruit, standing on the goal line, put her leg out and deflected the ball out of bounds to maintain the 1-0 lead.
- The Golden Eagles were able to stifle Lourdes one last time on the ensuing corner kick to seal the shutout victory.
