MBB Coach Elders

Legendary Head Coach Kim Elders nears another incredible feat as the 28-year vet sits one win away from 700 in his career. Coach E looks to become the 20th coach ever in NAIA history to crack 700 wins and be the third active coach to hit the mark. According to an article from the Detroit Free Press, Elders also sits 21 wins away from becoming the all-time wins leader in the state of Michigan.

Balanced attack

The Golden Eagles opened the season in the WHAC/CL Classic where they split a pair of games with a loss at number three Indiana Wesleyan (107-80), followed by a win vs. Spring Arbor (82-73). The team opened the year with incredible offensive balance with four players averaging double figures and the teams leading scorer coming off the bench in both games. Drew Knickerbocker scored 18 off the bench in the opener, followed by 13 points from Kyle Hayes in game two.

Tyler Baker set to crack 1,000

Tyler Baker

Redshirt-Senior Tyler Baker is set to become the 44th Golden Eagle in program history to crack 1,000 career points, sitting just five points away with 995 going into the Cornerstone Classic this weekend. Baker is averaging 10.1 PPG in his career and is looking to join senior Christian Rodriguez on the 1,000 point scoring list. Rodriguez cracked 1,000 just last season as Baker and Rodriguez become the first 1,000 point duo to play for CU at the same time since Kyle Steigenga and Sam Vander Sluis in 2018.

Saint Xavier of the Chicagolands Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) will open their 2020-21 campaign at the Golden Eagles. The Cougars return four of their five starters from last season, including the top three leading scorers in Josh Evans, Josh Niego, and Jack Halverson. The Cougars play a small guard based lineup led by Evans who averaged 17.7 PPG and 77 assists in 2019-20. Cornerstone played SXU just last season and earned an 81-75 win in Palos Heights, Illinois.

IU-East Dropped Out

IU-East

The Cornerstone Classic was also supposed to bring in receiving votes IU-East to Grand Rapids but as we have seen during these uncertain times of COVID-19 the team was forced to drop out. Cornerstone is looking for a fourth team all the way up to the beginning of the tournament and further updates will be given at cugoldeneagles.com if a team is to be added.
