AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles got their first win of 2020 with a dominating 9-1 win over Judson in Auburndale on Wednesday morning. CU then played Mount Vernon Nazarene where they fell 7-4 in a rain shortened game to move to 1-7 on the year. The day was highlighted by two home runs from senior
Kyle DeSchryver and an outstanding pitching performance from
Michael Foster in his first career start. CU has the day off tomorrow before a double-header against Trinity Christian on Friday starting at 10:30 a.m.
Game One – Cornerstone – 9 Judson - 1
- Cornerstone got on the board first as Clayton Coatney grounded out in the top of the second inning to score Grant Young who singled earlier in the inning.
- Judson immediately responded with a run in the bottom of the inning on a Jordan Babcock double to make it 1-1.
- The CU defense stepped up in a big way on the Babcock double however, gunning down the run that would have given Judson the lead to keep it tied.
- Both pitchers settled in after that, holding their opponents scoreless the next three innings. Michael Foster recorded three strikeouts in the first five innings while allowing just two hits.
- Clayton Coatney got Cornerstone the lead back in the top of the sixth, with an RBI single that scored Grant Young to make it 2-1.
- In the top of the seventh, Jordan Wenzel doubled, and Cain Ruiz reached on an error before Kyle DeSchryver hit his second career home run to blow the game open and make it 5-1.
- Freshman Evan Shirley added to the top of the seventh hit train with a two RBI single to make it 7-1.
- A double steal added one more run in the seventh as Trenton Gilman came home to make it 8-1.
- Michael Foster exited in the seventh due to a tight back but put up a phenomenal outing in his first collegiate start with 6.0 innings pitched, two hits, one run, zero earned runs.
- Kyle DeSchryver stayed hot in the eighth inning hitting his second home run of the game with a solo bomb to make it 9-1.
- Andrew VanDyke pitched the final three innings for the Golden Eagles and held Judson off the scoreboard to get CU their first win of the season 9-1.
Game Two –Mount Vernon Nazarene – 7 Cornerstone – 4 (In Eight)
- Jeremy Praski got the start in the second game of the day vs. Mount Vernon Nazarene, and ran into some early trouble giving up a double and a single. A run later scored in the inning on a Cornerstone error that made it 1-0 in favor of MVNU.
- Landon Poll and Clayton Coatney recorded back-to-back hits to lead off the bottom of the third. Poll later came around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1.
- Jordan Wenzel stayed hot in his at bat later in the inning with a double to right center that brought in Clayton Coatney to give CU the 2-1 advantage.
- Trenton Gilman increased the run total to four in the bottom of the third with a two RBI double that scored Cain Ruiz and Jordan Wenzel to make it 4-1.
- After an outstanding first four innings, MVNU got to Jeremy Praski a little bit in the top of the fifth with multiple singles and stolen bases to cut the deficit to just one run at 4-3.
- Jeremy Praski rebounded with a 1-2-3 top of the sixth inning, striking out his first batter of the game to end the inning.
- Jeremy Praski started the seventh and walked the first batter. The decision was then made to relieve Praski and put in freshman Clayton Schwiebert by Head Coach Chuck Lowitzki in a 4-3 game.
- Schwiebert walked two batters before being relieved by Derryk Vanderjagt. Vanderjagt gave up a three-run double that allowed MVNU to regain the lead 6-4.
- Jackson Helder pitched the eighth and MVNU got one run off of him with a sacrifice fly to add some insurance and make it 7-4.
- Cornerstone loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth but the weather forced the umpires to call the game, giving MVNU the 7-4 win.
