Women's basketball falls just short in battle with Rochester

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A closely contested WHAC matchup saw Cornerstone fall just short to the Warriors of Rochester University. The Golden Eagles led for the majority of the second half, but a late Rochester push gave them an 80-75 victory over CU. With three games remaining in the regular season, the Golden Eagles will look to finish the year strong. Cornerstone's next opponent is Lourdes University, who CU will welcome to Mol Arena this upcoming Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm and live links will be available at cugoldeneagles.com

Game Flow
  • A back-and-forth first quarter set the tone for the rest of the game. A late foul by the Golden Eagles sent Rochester to the line with a 15-14 lead. The Warriors would go on to sink them both and take a three-point edge into the second.
  • Cornerstone grabbed control in the second quarter, shooting 61.5% from the floor. The Golden Eagle defense forced five turnovers and pushed their lead to an eight-point advantage. A pair of late buckets drew Rochester within 4, making it 38-34 CU heading into the half.
  • Energy and emotion were both high in the third as the teams grappled for control. Each side tallied six fouls in the hotly contested quarter, with CU continuing to hold onto their lead. Rochester was able to draw level once in the quarter, but it was the Golden Eagles taking a 54-51 lead into the fourth.
  • Frantic is the perfect word to describe the final quarter, as the lead changed hands multiple times. Cornerstone struggled to take care of the ball in the fourth, coughing it up six times. The Warriors took advantage, getting to the free-throw line and eventually taking the lead with six and a half minutes left in the quarter. The Golden Eagles would battle with all they had, but Rochester never looked back, leaving Mol Arena with a tough 80-75 win.
