Offense scores 15 in win vs. Judson; Falls to Mount Vernon Nazarene

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles had a long day on the field today, playing two nine-inning games as they fell to 6-3 to Mount Vernon before responding with a 15-9 win over Judson. The offense was highlighted by home runs from Jordan Wenzel and Dan Sewak. Cornerstone is now 4-10 on the year as they continue Russ Matt action against Robert Morris tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. for a double-header in Auburndale. 

Game One – Mount Vernon – 6 Cornerstone – 3
  • Grant Young got the start in game one and threw a phenomenal first inning, needing just five pitches to record three outs and sit MVNU down 1-2-3. 
  • Grant Young continued his spectacular start with a great defensive play to record an unassisted putout to start inning number two. However, a two out double by Cameron Miller allowed Mount Vernon to get on the board first and make it 1-0. 
  • Through three innings, Cornerstone recorded four hits but was unable to score any runner as they continued to trail 1-0. 
  • Similar to the second inning, MVNU scored a runner from first on a Devin Pearl RBI double to make it 2-0 in favor of the Cougars. 
  • MVNU added a third run in the fifth inning on a pickoff throw error, allowing Aaron Saal to score and make it 3-0. 
  • Grant Young's start on the mound ended after six innings of work, three runs (one earned), three hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. 
  • Mount Vernon found another run in the top of the seventh after a double from Aaron Saal came around to score on a bunt single and error by CU to bring the Cougars lead to 4-0. 
  • One more MVNU run crossed the plate in the seventh on the fifth CU error of the game to make it 5-0. 
  • Cornerstone found the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh as Jordan Wenzel singled to go along with an error by the MVNU right fielder allowed Landon Poll to score and make it 5-1. Kyle DeSchryver later grounded out to score Evan Shirley and made it 5-2. 
  • CU continued to chip away in the bottom of the seventh, as Clayton Coatney hit a sacrifice fly that scored Jordan Wenzel to cut the deficit to 5-3. All three runs were scored on the Mount Vernon bullpen. 
  • Mount Vernon immediately responded as the pinch hitter Kobe Miller led the top of the eighth off with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly to increase the Cougars advantage back to 6-3. 
  • Cornerstone was unable to find any more offense in the game, falling 6-3 in the first of two on the day. 
 
 
 


Game Two –Cornerstone – 15 Judson - 9
  • Cornerstone got off to a fast start as Evan Shirley led the game off with a double and Jordan Wenzel immediately followed with a two-run home run to left center to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead. 
  • Another two-run home run came in the second inning as nine hitter Daniel Sewak hit one just over the fence in left field that also scored Landon Poll and quickly made it 4-0. 
  • Dan Sewak and Jordan Wenzel stayed hot in the fourth as Sewak doubled to score Landon Poll and Wenzel singled to score Cain Ruiz and make it 6-0. 
  • Jermey Praski allowed a base runner in each of the first three innings but pitched out of it flawlessly. In the fourth however the Judson four hitter Moran hit a solo home run to get the Eagles on the board and make it 6-1. Andrew Van Dyke was called upon to close out the fourth inning. 
  • Judson was not done in the fourth however with a two RBI single and then a three-run home run from leadoff hitter Dayne Frederick to tie the game 6-6. 
  • Cornerstone did not waste any time getting back on top, scoring two in the top of the fifth on a Grant Young RBI single and a Landon Poll RBI double to regain the 8-6 advantage. 
  • After Andrew VanDyke walked a batter and gave up a double, a Judson runner scored in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch to cut it to 8-7. 
  • Clayton Coatney made a huge throw from right field to gun down the tying run at the plate and Jaxson Helder recorded a strikeout to end the inning, keeping CU on top 8-7 after five. 
  • Dan Sewak recorded his third hit and fourth RBI of the game in the top of the seventh with a single that scored Isaac Tayes and made it 9-7. 
  • Isaac Tayes got CU to double-digit runs with an RBI single that scored Kyle DeSchryver to make it 10-7. 
  • Later in the eighth, a Judson error allowed two more runs to score to make it 12-7 in favor of Cornerstone. 
  • Judson again began to come back, scoring a run on a wild pitch and a hit by pitch to make it 12-9.
  • Clayton Coatney recorded a two RBI single in the ninth to make it 14-9. Kyle DeSchryver added run 15 on a throwing error from the Judson catcher. 
  • Jared Riley faced some trouble but managed to close the game and give CU the 15-9 win in game two. 
 
 
By the Numbers 
4 – Dan Sewak went 4-5 in game two with a team high four RBI on the day. 
5 – Jordan Wenzel led the team with five hits on the day including three in the win with one being a home run. 
6.0 – Grant Young had the longest outing on the mound for CU, going 6.0 innings and allowing just one earned run. 
 
 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone is back at it tomorrow against Robert Morris University out of Illinois. The double-header begins at 9:30 a.m. at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida.
