Softball upsets Bellevue, falls to Bethel

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Fresh off a day of rest on Wednesday, the Golden Eagles came out swinging on Thursday, upsetting Bellevue, who is receiving votes in the NAIA poll, by a score of 9-3 before falling to Bethel, 6-4. The split brings the Golden Eagles' record to 4-5 heading into the final four games of the trip, starting with Saint Francis and 4th-ranked Marian tomorrow afternoon.

Game One: Cornerstone 9 – #RV Bellevue 3
  • After getting a base hit in the 1st inning, McKena Razenberg came around to score on a wild pitch
  • Bellevue knotted the game at 1-1 with a solo home run in the 2nd.
  • Allisen Martz doubled to lead off the 3rd inning then scored on an error to put CU up 2-1.
  • Mikayla Meade retired 10 of 11 Bellevue batters to start the game.
  • The floodgates opened for seven Cornerstone runs in the top of the 5th, which featured a two-RBI single for McKenzie Butgereit, an RBI double from Erin VanderWeele, a squeeze bunt RBI from Courtney Ducharme, a bloop RBI single from Sierra Sanchez, and finally a two-run home run for Alessa Baldwin-Buchner.
  • The Bruins scored a run in both the 5th and 6th innings but it proved to be too little too late, as Cornerstone prevailed 9-3.

Pitchers lines:
Mikayla Meade: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 3 K, 2 ER
Kaitlin Johnson: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K, 1 ER

Notable:
  • Mikayla Meade had two 1-2-3 innings in the circle, while Johnson ended the game with a 1-2-3 frame in the 7th inning.
  • Erin VanderWeele had her first collegiate RBI and multi-hit game.
  • Alessa Baldwin-Buchner's home run was her first as a Golden Eagle.
  • The seven runs scored in the 5th inning are the most in an inning since April 21, 2017 when the Golden Eagles scored seven in the first inning against Lawrence Tech.

Game Two: Cornerstone 4 – Bethel 6
  • Hannah May drove in two runs with a base hit in the first inning.
  • Bethel took a 3-2 lead after a solo home run in the 2nd inning and a couple unearned runs in the 3rd inning.
  • Morgan Murat tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single to center field in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
  • The Pilots hit back-to-back RBI singles to take a 5-3 advantage after four innings.
  • Lexi Lieske had a one-out RBI double to cut the deficit to just 5-4 in the 6th, but the rally was cut short with a line drive double play to shortstop.
  • Hannah May had a two-out double in the 7th inning to bring the game-tying run to the plate, but the game ended on an infield popout.

Pitchers lines:
