Softball stifled by Saint Francis, No. 4 Marian

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – One day after recording a two-game total of 23 hits, the Golden Eagles recorded only five in a pair of losses to Saint Francis and 4th-ranked Marian on Friday. The setbacks bring Cornerstone's record to 4-7 heading into the final day of the spring break trip that features games against Hannibal-LaGrange and Calumet St. Joseph.

Game One: Cornerstone 2 – Saint Francis 7
  • Both teams scored a run in the top of the 1st inning. Lexi Lieske led off with a base hit before coming home off the bat of McKenzie Butgereit.
  • The Cougars exploded for six runs in the 3rd inning, half of which came from a bases-clearing double to right center field.
  • Lexi Lieske hit a sacrifice fly to score Nathalie Ferry in the 7th inning, but the Golden Eagles ultimately fell 7-2.

Notable:
  • Nathalie Ferry recorded her first career hit with a pinch-hit single in the 7th inning.
  • Kaitlin Johnson, in her first at-bat of the season, followed Ferry with a base hit of her own down the left field line.

Game Two: Cornerstone 0 – #4 Marian 8 (5 innings)
  • The Knights came out swinging, scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom of the 1st inning.
  • Marian tacked on two more in the 2nd inning, but Ashley Loera was able to limit the damage by leaving a runner in scoring position.
  • Seven of the first nine Cornerstone batters were retired by a strikeout.
  • Cierra Langejans recorded her first hit of the season with a base hit to center field in the 3rd inning.
  • Sterling DeGayner, making her first appearance at 2nd base, ended the 4th inning with a groundout
  • Marian recorded three runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to take an 8-0 lead, ending the game by mercy rule.

Notable:
  • Shylin Robirds made her first appearance in the field, starting the game at 3rd base.
  • Robirds and Kailin Hurrle each had three assists and 3rd base and shortstop, respectively.
  • Second time this season that Cornerstone only recorded one hit (Spring Arbor, March 2) and second mercy of the season (Florida National, February 29)
  • Three of the five CU hits (over both games) were firsts of the season (Ferry, Johnson, Langejans)

What's next?
Cornerstone (4-7) will conclude the spring break trip with a 10:15am game against Hannibal-LaGrange and a 12:15pm contest against Calumet St. Joseph.
