AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles returned to action after an off day with two against Trinity Baptist, and fell 7-6 in extra innings in game one before rebounding with a 7-3 game two victory.
Kyle DeSchryver earned his first collegiate victory on the mound, while
Trenton Gilman highlighted the offense with a 5-7 day at the plate. CU is now 6-14 with two more games remaining on the spring break trip against Trinity Christian tomorrow starting at 9 a.m.
Game One – Trinity Baptist – 7 Cornerstone – 6
- Cornerstone got off to a fast start as Kyle DeSchryver doubled to score Evan Shirley and make it 1-0.
- Trenton Gilman and Clayton Coatney each recorded RBI singles to follow DeSchryver's RBI and make it 3-0 in the top of the first.
- Trinity Baptist got their first out of the inning on an Isaac Tayes sacrifice fly that scored Trenton Gilman that made it 4-0 CU after the top of the first.
- TBC got their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, on a groundout by Parker Laffe that scored Zavier Deiga who singled earlier in the inning to make it 4-1.
- Trinity Baptist continued to chip away in the third scoring a run on a stolen base and error by the catcher Clayton Coatney to make it 4-2 in favor of Cornerstone.
- Later in the inning TBC saw their DH David Queved double down the left field line and the second baseman Michael Cama single to score two more runs and tie the game at four.
- Cornerstone regained the lead in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Clayton Coatney that scored Jordan Wenzel from third and made it 5-4.
- An immediate response was recorded by Trinity Baptist in the bottom of the fifth, as Christian Am scored on a groundout to make it 5-5 after five.
- A leadoff double for Landon Poll turned into run number six for the Golden Eagles on a sacrifice fly from Evan Shirley to give CU the lead back 6-5.
- Trinity Baptist once again tied the game on a sacrifice fly that scored Michael Cama after he earlier reached on an error.
- Starter Jeremy Praski was relieved after six innings of work by Michael Foster in a tie game. Foster kept Trinity Baptist off the board in the seventh to force extra innings.
- TBC recorded a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth. After a sacrifice bunt, Cornerstone chose to intentionally walk the next two batters to load the bases with one out. Trinity Baptist then responded with a bunt single that scored Clayton Powe and gave them the 7-6 win in game one.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 7 Trinity Baptist – 3
- Offense came at a premium in game two as both teams were scoreless through two innings of play.
- Kyle DeSchyrver pitched flawlessly to start allowing just one hit in 3.0 innings of work while striking out three batters.
- The pitcher Kyle DeSchryer came up with an RBI double in the bottom of the third to score Jordan Wenzel with two outs and get CU on the board first.
- Trenton Gilman stayed hot with a base knock that scored pinch runner Evan Shirley later in the inning to make it 2-0 Cornerstone.
- In the top of the fourth Kyle DeSchryver did some masterful work on the mound after a runner advanced to third with just one out, striking out a batter and getting a groundout to keep the score 2-0.
- In the bottom of the fourth, an error helped Cain Ruiz get to third and Dan Sewak later hit a sacrifice fly to bring him home and make it 3-0.
- Trinity Baptist got to DeSchryver in the top of the fifth recording an RBI single to cut the deficit to two at 3-1.
- Kyle DeSchryver was relieved by Derryk Vanderjagt with the bases loaded. Vanderjagt walked his first batter to make it 3-2 before getting out of the inning.
- TBC starter Thomas Burns struggled in the fifth, walking three straight before Grant Young singled through the left side to score two for the Golden Eagles and make it 5-2.
- Trinity Baptist put in reliever Marrick Aske to get the final two outs of the fifth.
- A wild pitch scored Landon Poll to make it 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Grant Young later scored on a Cain Ruiz sacrifice fly to open the game up and make it 7-2.
- Derryk Vanderjagt pitched two innings being just one out shy of closing the game before having to leave due to injury. Jackson Helder recorded the final out after giving up a bases loaded walk to give CU the 7-3 game two win.
