GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles men's and women's tennis team brought sports back to campus for the first time in 182 days with a bang, each earning 7-0 sweeps over NCAA DIII opponent Olivet College. The match that took just over two hours at NorthPointe Christian High School saw every Golden Eagle win in straight sets to start the year off 1-0 on both sides. Both teams are scheduled to play Calvin University next week with the men on September 16 and the women on September 17, but those matches are subject to change due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic.
Men's Recap
Doubles Results – The day began with doubles where the Golden Eagle men won handedly, as the duos of
Tanner Howard/
Alejandro Santana and
Matthew Hall/
Nick Kleitch each earned 6-0 victories at the number two and three doubles positions. At the top flight,
John Cocoma and
Aliaksei Kanstantsinau needed a little more work to earn the victory, but won 6-3 to give CU the sweep and the 1-0 lead headed into singles play.
Singles Results – The Golden Eagles were dominant in singles play as not a single Olivet player won more than two games, with
Jacob Stegman earning the straight 6-0, 6-0 sweep at number four singles.
Aliaksei Kanstantsinau took the win at the number one singles position 6-0, 6-2, while
Alejandro Santana in his first match as a CU athlete won 6-1, 6-1 at the number two spot.
Women's Recap
Doubles Results – It did not take long for CU to get through doubles play as similarly to the men the number two and number three duo teams of
Valentina Garcia/
Nicole VerHulst and
Trinity Klamecki/
Katarina Vasiljkovic each earned 6-0 victories. The top flight of
Alayna Bowman and
Hanna De La Vega Sanchez gave up just one game in their 6-1 doubles victory.
Singles Results – In singles,
Trinity Klamecki and
Nicole VerHulst did not give up a game at number four and number six singles respectively each winning 6-0, 6-0.
Alayna Bowman picked up right where she left off in her freshman season, earning a 6-1, 6-1 win at the number one singles position helping lead the Golden Eagles to a 7-0 team victory over the Olivet College Comets.
What's Next?
Both Cornerstone men's and women's tennis teams have matches against Calvin University tentatively scheduled for the 16
th and 17
th of September pending agreement due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic.
