Cornerstone men's volleyball is set for their WHAC Home Opener, looking for a huge upset against NAIA number five Lourdes University this Friday. This is the lone game of the week for the Golden Eagles after a few schedule changes regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. CU will return to a much busier schedule with two conference games and one non-conference game next week. Friday's game can be streamed live at cugoldeneagles.com/watch for those who are not in attendance due to a limited guest pass list only fan list with the current MDHHS orders. 

LAST WEEK RECAP 

Cornerstone played in two non-conference matches last week with their program home opener against Judson on Thursday and their WHAC opener on Saturday at Mount Vernon. Despite falling in both, Cornerstone saw significant improvement and some major program milestones, winning their first ever set played in Mol Arena 25-21 over Judson. Freshman Cade Meza continues to shine leading the team with 20 kills, and tallying nine in the four set match against Judson. 

SCOUTING LOURDES

Lourdes has gotten off to an impressive start in 2021, with a 2-0 record defeating Queens out of North Carolina in five sets and Mount Vernon Nazarene in straight sets both at home. The Gray Wolves are one of the most experienced programs in the WHAC, starting their men's volleyball all the way back in 2012. The WHAC has only sponsored men's volleyball since 2019 and Lourdes has won the conference regular season title each of the first two years. The Gray Wolves return two First Team All-WHAC players in Ricardo Gehrke and Jeff Lam. In 2021 Gehrke is averaging 9.57 APG, which is eighth best in the NAIA this season. Jeff Lam has only played in one match this season, but tallied 12 kills along with two blocks as he hit .500 on the match. The junior Guga Heidrich ha been a standout in the early season as the teams Libero, recording 38 digs and ranking first in the country with 4.75 digs per set.
