GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a game of runs between two WHAC heavyweights, the Golden Eagles came out on the losing end of a two-overtime thriller, 108-102. With two seconds remaining in regulation,
Tyler Baker hit a three to take the lead, but Henry Speight of Madonna responded with a three just inside half court to keep the Crusaders alive. With the loss, Cornerstone drops to 4-3, 1-1 WHAC on the year as they will return to action back in Mol Arena on Monday against Lawrence Tech at 7:30 p.m.
What you need to know?
- Cornerstone got out to an 11-7 lead, highlighted by a Kyle Hayes and one just under five minutes into the half.
- Madonna then erupted for a 16-0 run that saw three consecutive made three point buckets to make it 23-11.
- Drew Knickerbocker hit the Golden Eagles first three of the half to bring the deficit back to 10.
- Madonna continued to push the lead to as high as 13 throughout the middle of the first half.
- A Crusader bench technical foul and a layup down low by Cory Ainsworth allowed Cornerstone to cut the lead all the way back down to six at 37-31 with 4:38 to play, forcing Madonna to take a timeout.
- Out of the timeout, Gabe Meriwether and Christian Rodriguez each hit a three to tie the game at 37.
- The Golden Eagle run continued all the way to the half, as CU scored the final 15 points of the period to lead 41-37. Christian Rodriguez recorded eight points and six assists in the half, while Cory Ainsworth had eight points.
- Two more buckets out of the half by Cory Ainsworth, increased the Golden Eagle run to 19-0 and made the lead eight.
- Cory Ainsworth continued to dominate in the post, bringing the lead to as large as nine at 51-42 with 16:34 to play.
- Madonna responded with a 5-0 run that saw a Henry Speight and one that immediately brought the game back to just a five-point CU lead.
- After Cornerstone brought the lead to a new game high of 10, Madonna once again found an offensive 10-0 run that tied the game at 62 with 8:04 to play.
- MU's Noah Campbell hit a layup with 6:49 to play to give the Crusaders their first lead of the second half, 66-64.
- The two teams then traded leads before Riley Costen hit a huge three with 4:05 to play to go on top 73-71.
- Both offenses were then stifled, as the only point scored in the next three minutes came on a Riley Costen free throw.
- With the game tied at 74, Tyler Baker hit a crucial three with just two seconds remaining to give the Golden Eagles the 77-74 advantage.
- Henry Speight of Madonna made sure the game did not end however, hitting a buzzer beater three just inside the half court line to take us to overtime.
- Cornerstone had the chance to take a one-point lead in the first overtime in the final seconds, but going 1-2 at the line caused the game to remain tied and bring it to a second OT.
- After the two teams traded buckets in the second overtime, Devin Dunn hit a dagger three that would put the Crusaders up four with 29 seconds to play.
- CU continued to get quick buckets, but could not get a stop forcing them to foul as they ultimately fell 108-102 in the second overtime.
