Close Loss at Northwestern Ohio as Women's Volleyball Falls 3-1

LIMA, Ohio – In a competitive WHAC contest, the Golden Eagles just couldn't get the breaks, falling 3-1 at Northwestern Ohio. Cornerstone tallied at least 22 points in each of the four sets, losing by two points in each of the first two sets. CU also led the match in kills (49), hitting percentage (.168), and points (65) amongst other stats. On a positive note for the Golden Eagles, Olivia Keelean had a career night, recording 18 kills to pace the Golden Eagles. 

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 1 Northwestern Ohio - 3 (23-25, 23-25, 25-11, 22-25)
  • Cornerstone got off to a hot start in the first set, winning six of the first seven points. Olivia Keelean and Kaylee Dykema each registered two points during that stretch.
  • CU took a 12-6 lead, capped by three straight UNO errors.
  • Northwestern Ohio won seven of eight points midway through the first set to even the set at 16-16.
  • The Golden Eagles took the next point, but then UNO went on a 3-0 run to take a 19-17 lead, which led to a CU timeout.
  • Cornerstone was able to tie up the set at 19 following two Racer attacking errors.
  • CU took a 22-21 lead, but then UNO won four of the next five points to take the first set 25-23.
  • The second set started off with back-and-forth play by both teams. UNO up 11-10 early went on a 3-0 run, capped by a Nevaeh Shugart kill.
  • Then, Cornerstone went on a pair of 3-0 runs, winning six of seven points to take a 16-15 lead.
  • Later in the second, Olivia Keelean had a kill to give CU a 22-19 lead. This caused for UNO to call a timeout.
  • The Racers took six of the next seven points, capped by a Taylor Reust kill to win the set 25-23.
  • The third set was all CU, as they started hot winning the first four points.
  • A few points later, Cornerstone started a 5-0 run to take a 13-6 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles went on another 5-0 run later in the set to take a 20-9 lead. 
  • CU finished the set strong, winning the last four points. Kathryn Detweiler put the set away with a kill to win the set 25-11.
  • The fourth set was another close set that saw runs by both teams. UNO went on a four-point run early to take a 5-2 lead. 
  • Northwestern Ohio went on a pair of four-point runs to take a big 19-11 lead in the fourth set.
  • Cornerstone went on a strong run on their own, winning eight of night points to cut the Racer lead to 20-19.
  • However, UNO was able to put the match away, winning five of the final eight points, on a Logan Thomas kill to win the fourth set 25-22.

What's Next?
Cornerstone will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. for a WHAC tilt against (RV) Indiana Tech tomorrow, October 16. The match is set to start at 1 p.m.
