GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The young Golden Eagle roster opened the 2021-22 women's basketball campaign with four new starters in the lineup and despite the high energy and speed from CU, the fell 70-56 vs. Grace College. Cornerstone was held to 36.8% from the field as they could not get the offense going, falling to 0-1 on the year. CU will travel for the first time on Saturday as they head to another Crossroads League school in Huntington for a 7 p.m. game.
Game Flow:
- Kaycee Sluiter scored the first two points of the 2021-22 season for the Golden Eagles on a jumper inside the paint.
- Both teams were playing with a lot of pace in the first quarter, but neither team could find the stroke early as Grace led 9-5 after five minutes of play.
- Audrey Dryer hit a three late in the first quarter to end a Grace 9-0 run. Ellen Kresge then hit a layup to cut the CU deficit to just four at the end of quarter one at 14-10.
- Cornerstone found their rhythm to start the second quarter as Mackenzie Stien scored six straight points to give the Golden Eagles a 16-14 advantage.
- The Lancers responded yet again with an 12-0 run to garnish their largest lead of 10 at 26-16.
- Grace continued to get to the line and dominate the paint as they outscored CU 18-8 in the second quarter to take a 32-18 advantage into halftime.
- The Lancer's Maddie Ryman hit a three to start the second half to bring the Grace lead to 35-18.
- Behind four points from Mackenzie Stien, Cornerstone was able to cut the Grace lead to 11.
- Cornerstone was unable to get closer than 11 however, as Grace pushed the lead all the way up to 22 and ended the third up 21, 56-35.
- The Golden Eagles continued to fight throughout the fourth quarter but were unable to make a dent in the Lancer lead as they would fall 70-56 in the season opener vs. Grace.
By the numbers:

Mackenzie Stien led CU with 13 points on 5-11 shooting.

Ellen Kresge recorded seven points and a team high seven rebounds in the loss.
