Men’s Soccer scores three unanswered goals to down Rochester 3-1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  –  After giving up a goal in the 11th minute, Cornerstone responded with three straight with a pair from Christian Galloway and one from Nate Kaercher to down the Rochester Warriors 3-1 on Wednesday evening. CU has now won two straight games, including their first at home, as they sit 3-7-1, 2-2-0 WHAC on the year. The Golden Eagles go back on the road this Saturday as they will take on Northwestern Ohio at 4 p.m.

The Highlights:
  • The two sides traded a shot each in the first 10 minutes for the only statistics of the game.
  • In the 11th minute, Rochester was able to take possession of a ball that was not cleared by the Golden Eagles, and after a couple bounces and deflections, Viktor Juncaj found the net on a half volley to give the Warriors a 1-0 advantage.
  • The momentum began to shift in the Golden Eagles favor in roughly the 25th minute. It later led to a goal from Christian Galloway off the cross from Davin McMullin that tied the game 1-1.
  • CU took advantage of some tired legs from Rochester late in the first half, as the substitute duo of Shuzuo Akamu and Nate Kaercher combined for a goal as Akamu found Kaercher on a break after the Warrior defender slipped and gave him space.
  • At the half, Cornerstone led 2-1.
  • Jeff Herrema led a 3v1 break early in the second half, and despite his reluctance to pass the ball early, he was fouled inside the box leading to a penalty kick.
  • Christian Galloway took on the penalty spot for the second consecutive game, and again found the net to make it 3-1 and give him his second goal of the game in the 49th minute.
  • Cornerstone began to see some cards late in the second half as Cody Bennett, Jason Lugo, and Jeff Herrema all saw yellow in the second half.
  • Senior keeper Alan Roman did all the work in the final half hour, making outstanding save after outstanding save to keep CU on top 3-1 and give them the victory in regulation.
